In the Old Testament, God’s people consisted of 12 tribes and a multitude of clans and families known corporately as the children of Israel. Through these family relational connections, God demonstrated the importance of generational inheritance, which is passed from father to son. Receiving this inheritance, which was first promised to Abraham and then passed on to his descendants, depended on the flow of blessing from generation to generation.

In a similar fashion, Jesus counseled His disciples to grow His Church, based on parenting believers in spiritual families. The Early Church knew the importance of relational connections. The Scriptures tell us that God’s people gathered at the Temple and met in small groups to minister to each other:
